WPC ASSEMBLY
May 6-9, 2004 Athens/Greece

The World Congress of the Peace movements will take place in Athens, Greece from 6th-9th May 2004.

More than 100 Organizations (Peace and Solidarity, Youth, Trade Unions and other movements) from all continents will participate.

The Assembly will coincide with the holding of the Peace Olympics organized by the Greek Peace Movement (EEDYE).

About the PEACE OLYMPICS

The Greek Committee for International Détente and Peace (EEDYE) proposed to the Secretariat of the WPC in July 2003 to endorse in its plan of action the holding of a campaign under the name PEACE OLYMPICS, which shall be carried out in Greece during January-May 2004 having as its goal to promote the values of peace and friendship of the peoples, of international solidarity and anti-imperialist struggle linked with the most burning problems of the world today. The focus will be on all kinds of military interventions and occupations, the preemptive wars, the nuclear weapons (new and old ones), the military bases, the NATO and EU army, the militarization of international relations.

Since the Olympic Games are taking place the same year in Greece we want to highlight from the political, cultural and sports aspect the progressive roots and origin of the Olympic games on the one hand and its commercialization and privatizations during all this years, giving emphasize to genuine popular elements of sports and the protagonists of it.

The idea is to organize in Greece during the period of January till May 2004 various events in many cities taking advantage of the presence of invited personalities, intellectuals, ex-athletes, and scientists, retired militaries which can contribute with their experience to the success of these events.

In Greece a broad steering committee will be very soon established, in which EEDYE will play an important role.

From WPC side we have been asked to support this initiative and to endorse it in our plan of action.

The PEACE OLYMPICS shall culminate and coincide in May in Athens with the holding of the Assembly of the WPC. The International Peace Marathon will be held on 9th May, with the closing of the Peace Olympics and the WPC Assembly.

EEDYE is requesting from all Member Committees and friendly organizations suggestions and proposals for personalities, which could be invited, to the above-mentioned events.
